Looking to jazz up your Geometry instruction? Here are some low-prep, low cost ways that your students are sure to love!
Shapes are Everywhere
Shapes are everywhere! And what better way to find them than to go on a Scavenger Hunt. It doesn’t matter if it is at school or at home, kids will love the hunt!
One of my favorite ways to hunt at school, is to split students up with partners and an iPad so they can document their hunt. We use Seesaw so they can create a collection and add it to an assignment. It’s a quick and easy way for students to share their hunt with their classmates and me! You might also choose to print the photos and create a collage to display in the room.
Label a Shape is another inexpensive, no prep activity. Hand out a stack of post-it notes and let students hunt and label! They can write the shape names on the paper or include the number of sides and vertices. It will be great writing practice, and students will enjoy exploring all the shapes.
Geometry Games
Games are always my go-to for teaching or reviewing any concepts. Kids are so focused on having fun, they don’t even realize they are learning!
Large 2D Shape Dominos are always a favorite! There is something about the extra large size that makes them fun to do on the floor or with a partner. (These will be added to my store soon!)
Shape Bingo is another fun game. And in my experience math bingo games are easy to find in any school! Students also love to create their own images with pattern blocks.
Musical Chairs is another no-cost option. Set chairs up in a circle and set the shapes on each chair. After the music stops and students get their seat, go around the circle and have them name the shape or one of it’s attributes.
Geometry Art
Art is another one of my go-tos to reinforce a concept or just to celebrate our learning! I am not an art teacher so I am sure to scour Pinterest or Instagram hunting for inspiration!
One favorite project is creating Shape Monsters or a Shape Town. Students record what shapes they used in their creation, and they make a great classroom or hallway display.
I am putting the finishing touches on this resource to add to my store if you are looking for no-prep; however, you can easily cut out various shapes or provide students with patterns and let them go crazy! You’ll be surprised with that they create!
